Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting (bars), or just rhyming), refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics". The art form can be broken down into different components, as in the book How to Rap where it is separated into “content”, “flow” (rhythm and rhyme), and “delivery”. Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that is it performed in time to a beat.

Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music, but the phenomenon predates hip hop culture by centuries. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area among speech, prose, poetry, and song. The use of the word to describe quick speech or repartee long predates the musical form, meaning originally "to hit". The word had been used in British English since the 16th century, and specifically meaning "to say" since the 18th. It was part of the African American dialect of English in the 1960s meaning "to converse", and very soon after that in its present usage as a term denoting the musical style. Today, the terms "rap" and "rapping" are so closely associated with hip hop music that many use the terms interchangeably.

What rapper has the most years between his first classic album and his last classic album?
Q. You can count rappers that have a classic album as part of group and as a solo artist if that makes a difference. Also, could you tell me if you think the rapper you chose is top 5 all-time? I'm just wondering how that correlates.

A. Well QTip's Renaissance is being hailed as Classic from some people I'm not too sure myself but that would make 1991 - 2008. I'm going to go with Masta Ace - Take a Look Around (1990) to Long Hot Summer (2004). Neither is probably Top 5 but both are 5 star MC's IMO.

A. No of course not! Grades in cooking aren't going to help you sing ;-) Maybe upload a few videos on youtube (I don't know how safe this is) of you singing. I know a lot of bands have been 'discovered' this way. If there are any communtiy events/ fetes etc and they want an entertainment line up, ask them if you can perform. Keep it up and someone may walk along... you seriously never know. On an anecdotal note, my friend was sitting with her family at Macdonalds and she was found there, they asked her if she wanted to appear in ads and now she's on T.V all the time. If your really desperate to start your career now, get an agent. You might get some work there. Make sure that you are mentally ready for this. I'm 17 and I don't think I… [cont.]

Where is the line between being inspired by another rapper and biting?
Q. We tend to consider the most influential artists for GOAT status - but yet if someone has a similar flow/style etc to another rapper, they get called a biter. What's the difference between being a biter and being influenced by another emcee? Does it come down to whether or not you like the rapper in question - be honest?

A. As narrow minded as it seems, there's really only so many styles someone can run with. And most of the older MCs covered all of them, and it's evident since most MCs derive their styles from them. So if someone is a dope storyteller, but isn't actually the best at different rhyme schemes I'm not gonna accuse them of biting Slick Rick, because everyone's style is derived from someone before them. They just add their personal touch. It becomes biting when someone blatantly takes something unique from a rapper before them. I consider Eminem a biter for taking that crazy white guy act from Cage and R.A the Rugged Man and his over the top/celebrity slandering punchlines from Chino XL. Without giving them credit. Jay-Z I don't consider so… [cont.]
